UK Cat Gets COVID-19

A UK cat has been diagnosed with the virus, but they’re fine now, and we don’t need to panic…

Last week (July 22nd), a cat became the first pet in the UK to test positive for COVID-19.

This may sound scary, but experts are urging owners not to panic.

There’s evidence that in extremely rare cases, COVID-19 can be passed from owners to their pets, but there’s ABSOLUTELY NO EVIDENCE TO SHOW THAT THE VIRUS CAN SPREAD FROM PETS DIRECTLY TO OWNERS.

Throughout Europe, Asia and North America, very few animals have caught the virus. Those that have caught it have only suffered mild symptoms, and have recovered fully in just a few days.

The UK cat who was diagnosed with COVID-19 was first diagnosed with feline herpesvirus. Further testing then proved the cat was also suffering from the coronavirus. 

The cat’s owner had tested positive for Covid-19, and it seems that the cat caught the virus from their owner. Both cat and owner have since made a full recovery, and the infection hasn’t spread to the rest of their household.

To set your mind at ease, you can follow some simple guidelines in order to limit the spread of the virus as much as possible:

If you’ve been diagnosed with the virus or have symptoms, keep your cat indoors (unless doing so is not recommended).

Wash your hands regularly, before and after touching your pet’s fur.
